I am a freelance humanitarian responder and analyst based in Greece, where I focus on the local effects of regional and global trends in migration policy development. I believe that community interventions are more effective when they are informed by broader policy discussions. And likewise, policymakers can create better policy if they are informed by local communities. That is why I work to bridge these two worlds. I was born in France and raised in the United States while always speaking Catalan at home. From an early age I learned to understand Europe and the world from a place of cultural fluidity. Obtaining degrees in history and international relations, over the course of my career I have worked in labor organisation and have provided legal assistance on the U.S.-Mexico border. I then went on to work as a policy analyst in Washington D.C., and now a humanitarian responder in Greece. Click HERE to read policy insights from Joel Hernàndez.
